Ripped jeans, messy hair, shinin’ like a pearl Written and composed by: Adelina Stîngă and Victor Bouroșu “Amnesia” lyrics – Roxen (Romania ESC 2021) Don’t feel bad for looking after yourself, y’all! It’s a very effective message from the young singer, and will definitely be appreciated by her fans and the Eurovision audience. It’s a lot more positive than “Alcohol You”, actually telling us the possibility and importance of looking after ourselves. “Self love, it’s never gone, self love, put it back on”. But says, no matter how much we neglect ourselves, we can always take time to ourselves. “Giving all they want might make you lose control, people always say ‘be careful watch you wish for’”. She continues blaming modern life for the troubled condition we find ourselves in and warns us not to become attached to it. She reminds us it’s okay to fall into a bad state “cause you’re not alone, not alone”. And then she speaks to the audience saying “don’t worry if it got you”. She describes the experience as “self-love amnesia”, forgetting to meet her own personal needs. “Oh, I lost myself tryna have it all, the world feels in a rush and they say they know it all”. She goes on, blaming the complications of the modern world for her poor state. “If you feel what I feel, see what I see, don’t bring yourself down”. She continues describing her own negative experiences. But, as goes on, she reveals that there is much more than the eye can see. Roxen starts the song by describing an ideal girl “like a summer day she could push the night so far away”. The song is thematically about self-neglect and portrays someone caught up in society who forgets to take care of themselves. Adelina Stîngă was one of the co-writers on Alexandra Stan’s 2019 hit “I Think I Love It”, while Victor Bouroșu, also known as Viky Red, is a singer-songwriter who handled her songs “Alcohol You”, “Storm” and “Ce-ți cântă dragostea”. “Amnesia” was written by Romanian songwriters Adelina Stîngă and Victor Bouroșu. Instead, her song was chosen by an internal panel of experts including former Eurovision star Luminiţa Anghel. Due to the pandemic and related budgetary constraints, there was no national final to choose Roxen’s song this year. Her Eurovision song was released on 4 March and has the same modern, dark tones we love from her. She released new music in the meantime, including a collaboration with Alexander Rybak. Roxen was reconfirmed as Romania’s entrant for Eurovision soon after the cancellation last year. Romania was amongst the favourites to win before the contest was cancelled. The song was a hit, becoming Roxen’s second number one and creating a positive reception with the bookies. She sang five songs at Selecția Națională 2020, and of those, “Alcohol You” was chosen. She was internally selected to sing for Romania through a songwriting camp between the broadcaster TVR and her label Global Records. Later that year, she released her debut solo single “Ce-ți cântă dragostea”, which reached number one and has over 33 million views on YouTube. It hit number three on the Romanian airplay chart and was picked up by radio stations worldwide. In 2019 she rose to fame when she featured on Stickoboy’s song “You Don’t Love Me”.

She took singing and piano lessons from the age of seven and went on to win several music competitions. Roxen - real name Larisa Roxana Giurgiu - has had a passion for music since childhood. Her song “Alcohol You” was selected through a national selection, and predicted to land Romania comfortably back in the final. To get the Eastern European country back on track, TVR last year internally selected young star Roxen. The former grand final regular Romania has struggled in recent years with two consecutive non-qualifications.
